Concord Biogas Plant

On 30th May 2024, Mr Rana Muhammad Mubeen Muhsin (P5881), postgraduate student (MSc by research) from the Institute of Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainable Development  (IBTPL), had the opportunity to visit the Concord Biogas Plant located in Kemaman, Terengganu Malaysia. The field trip was organized by Ts. Dr. Mohammad Hakim Bin Che Harun under the subject Wastewater Treatment Technology (KAS3223 Teknologi Rawatan Air Sisa). It is a core subject for the second-year students from Bachelor of Technology (Environment), Faculty of Engineering Technology (FTKK), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). Ms. Nur Khairunnazifa Binti Shahronnizat (S65725) coordinates the arrangement of the students. The field trip gives better exposure and understanding on green technology focusing on the electricity generation from oil palm waste. The process begins with waste collection and initial treatment in a mixing tank, where pH, temperature, and humidity are adjusted. The waste is then processed in a 30,000 cubic meter anaerobic digester, producing biogas through microbial digestion. The biogas is purified, cooled, compressed, and used in a generator to produce 400 watts of electricity. This electricity is then transformed to 11 kV for supply to the grid. The plant’s 2 MW capacity highlights biogas technology’s potential for sustainable energy production. Overall, the visit has provided an insightful overview of how palm waste is efficiently converted into biogas and subsequently into electricity.
