Survey of Aquatic Insects at Several Selected Rivers in Kenyir Lake

By: Muhammad Hafiz Bin Sulaiman

Sampling of aquatic insects was conducted from 17 May to 19 May 2016. Four rivers were selected namely Tembat River, Petuang River, Buluh Nipis River and Mandak River. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the health level of water resources in Lake Kenyir by using aquatic insects as a biological indicator. This is because, some of aquatic insects order are very sensitive towards pollution. Based on observation, selected sampling sites can be categorized as clean. However, the impact of Tembat River Dam construction showed negative impact towards the diversity and abundance of aquatic insects influenced by significant water level depletion. Mandak, Buluh Nipis and Petuang River can be classified as pristine and many species as well as order of sensitive aquatic insects can be found abundantly such as order Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Ephemeroptera. Researchers involved were Dr. Wahizatul Afzan Azmi, Ahmad Azinuddin Rumli, Johari Mohd Nor dan Muhammad Hafiz Sulaiman.
